ONE-OFFs ON SALE: The Hold Steady, Gnarls Barkley/Kanye West, Morrissey, and Brazilian Girls

What is it with the one-offs, anyway?

We've already determined that the concert season is getting off to a big start with all the new tours on sale this week. But there also seems to be a sudden glut of one-off concerts, be they festivals or multi-night stands at the same venue. Yep, this week has seen the release of a bunch of dates where folks in one city, and one city alone, get to reap the benefits. So while I'm spoiled living in NY in that I get to see The Hold Steady, what about Gnarls, Kanye, Morrissey and the Brazilian Girls, dagnabit? And what about everybody who doesn't live in CA, Vegas or NY? Huh? What about them? Drool on...

THE HOLD STEADY
First off, let's start with the stuff my neighbors and I get to see. (Shameless selfishness, I know, but humor me.) We have the unusual opportunity to catch one of New York's fave local bands, The Hold Steady, at one of New York's fave local venues: Northsix. Well, to be perfectly accurate, it's a fave Williamsburg venue. Meanwhile, they haven't given us much time to get used to the idea. The show takes place this coming Thursday, 1/18. The info came from a posting to their friends' bulletin boards on MySpace, which implied the gig has something to do with the release of their new album, Boys and Girls in America, on vinyl. It even comes in candy colors: Pink, Blue, & Black. Here's the deets from the bulletin board:

The Hold Steady are pleased to announce a special show at Northsix in
Brooklyn on Thursday, January 18th! The presale goes up on sale Friday, January 12th, 2007 at 12 AM Eastern Time. By buying tickets through our presale, you'll save money on service charges! Click here to buy tickets.

BRAZILIAN GIRLS with DISCO BISCUITS and more
Heading up North from NYC, we find an interestinglittle fest, where one of my all-time favorite live bands, the Brazilian Girls, will be showcased among a heap of other acts. For more about the Brazilians, check out my review of their bawdy, naughty New Years Eve gig at Irving Plaza. For more about the fest, here's the info from LiveDaily.com:

The Disco Biscuits, Brazilian Girls, Little Feat, Tea Leaf Green and The Slip are among the acts who've signed on for this year's Snoe.Down festival. The event--which is set to take place in Lake Placid, NY, March 23-25--will also feature a headlining performance from the festival's founding act, indie-jam outfit moe.. Ticketing info is available at the festival's website.

FUSION FEST featuring
GNARLS BARKLEY, KANYE WEST and more
Next we head West to Vegas for another fab fest: Fusion. But this one adds flash to fabulousness, what with the presence of Kanye West, and all. Then you've got the odd-ball marvelousness of Gnarls Barkley. Who knows what costumed capers Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse will create for this show in the city of high rollers. All I know is I wish I could be there to see it. Damn you, Vegas! What happens there sure does stay there... and only there. (*sigh*) Here's the Fusion line-up at the Aladdin Theater for the Performing Arts on 2/14:
--Kanye West
--Gnarls Barkley
--Lupe Fiasco
--Spank Rock
--Girl Talk

MORRISSEY
Last but not least on our whirlwind trip West is a final stop over for three nights in Pasadena. That's where master of mope, the Mozzer -- a.k.a. Morrissey -- will entrance the crowd with his signature sound stylings. And now it's time to come clean: I've never seen Morrissey live. Nope, not once. Not even considering The Smiths remain one of the pinnacles of rock in my book, and Moz's solo work ain't too shabby, either. Not even in his advancing years. He's a living legend, and I still haven't seen him. For shame. (*sniff*)  But you, oh you lucky Californians, you can escape my fate. Tickets go on sale Sat, 1/13. Here's the info from LiveDaily.com:

British alt-rock pioneer Morrissey has announced plans for a three-night stand at Pasadena, CA's Civic Auditorium. Tickets for the trio of shows--which will run Feb. 1-3--hit the box office Saturday; details are available at the venue's website.
