TOURS ON SALE THIS WEEKEND: Bloc Party, The Shins, Cold War Kids, and Gomez/Ben Kweller

What the heck is up with this weekend?! It seems like everybody and their brother (or is it really just everybody and their brother at LiveNation?) figured this was the weekend to put new tours on sale. Been wondering when the 2007 concert season would kick off? Well, brother, let me tell you that the future is now. The season seems to start earlier and earlier with each passing year. Or maybe the number of bands worth seeing is just growing and growing. Who knows? Who cares? All I know is that it's good. Spread the news, share the love, and go see a rock show. Here are some ones worth your hard-earned dough...

BLOC PARTY

Hell yes!  I'm beside myself with glee. And I'm not exaggerating. Bloc Party are by far one of the best bands out there today to see live. And thank goodness you don't have to wait longer than until tomorrow to get your tickets! Now that drummer Matt Tong has healed his heavy-breathers and is ready to kick back behind his kick drum again, Bloc Party are ready to fete the release of their long-awaited new album with a North American Tour.

Not only is it a meaty national tour, but my fellow New Yorkers and I get not one, but two dates to enjoy our beloved Brits. Never heard of The United Palace? Neither had I. Yes, it's a helluva long trek all the way up to 175th, literally just shy of The Cloisters, but wait til you get a load of this place. Seriously, check out these photos. You'll want to buy tickets just to see the venue: The United Palace Theater Gallery

THE SHINS with special guests VIVA VOCE
What other band has us waiting on pins and needles waiting for a follow-up to a breakthrough album, which is poised and ready to come out any second now? Why The Shins, of course! So why pick any other weekend than this one to put the supporting tour on sale? Thankfully, neither Bloc Party nor The Shins are greedy bastards, so you can actually afford to fork over the change for BOTH bands. And I highly recommend you do so.

The Shins were one of the better shows I saw last summer, and happily, I've got proof. Check out any of the smattering of live concert footage I took at their show at McCarren in Brooklyn:

The Celibate Life        Pressed in a Book       Young Pilgrims           New Slang

And how lucky are we that they hand-picked Viva Voce to come along for the ride?! (Never heard of 'em? Go check 'em out. Totally worth it.) So lest I keep you on pins and needles any longer, here's the deets...

COLD WAR KIDS
And just to prove what a perfect storm this weekend is, here come the
Cold War Kids to seal the deal. One of the biggest success stories of October's CMJ Music Festival, this is one buzz band you should catch. I'll leave it to LiveDaily.com to fill in the blanks with some color commentary:

California indie rockers Cold War Kids have lined up an extensive schedule of shows over the first few months of the new year as the band continues to support its recent debut album, "Robbers and Cowards." The Fullerton, CA, foursome will bounce back and forth between Los Angeles and New York for most of January, with the band performing three gigs in each city on an alternating basis, and will then head out for a Feb. 20 show in San Diego to properly kick off its trek. The group will hit more than 30 cities on the outing, with Tokyo Police Club and Delta Spirit handling opening duties for most of the shows.

BEN KWELLER with GOMEZ
Next up on the radar? Ben Kweller is joining British band Gomez for a North American tour, plus heading out for some solo dates of his own. I caught the young upstart opening for Matisyahu, and was extraordinarily impressed. It was sheer moxy to get up there all on his lonesome with nothing but a guitar to lean on. Well, he also put down the guitar and leant on the piano. A multifaceted multitalent.

Meanwhile, with the popularity of Gomez, you'll want to get online bright and early so as to not miss out on tix. Who are Gomez? Get a gander with my review of their '06 show at The Bowery.
