>>The Apples in Stereo at Bowery Ballroom, 2/15/07
Kind of a pain in the behind to get to, but so worth it once you're there, the Bowery Ballroom
just sort of seeps cool from its very pores. If live music venues even
have pores. This is one of those venues for which you absolutely must
sign up for their newsletter. Their lineups are so consistently good,
you're going to be a more informed, more adventurous music fan if you
do. And if you aren't wild about every band, there's a whole separate
bar downstairs where you can sit out the talent on stage.
My
fave spot is up in the balcony. You've got a nice view out over the
heads of the crowd, but you're still super close to the stage, simply
because the venue just isn't that big. So balcony does not equal
feeling totally removed, like it can at so many venues. Plus, you'll
get your beer far faster at the bar upstairs.
If you prefer
being in the thick of it on the floor -- say, if you want to take some
close-up shots of the band, for instance -- there's a secret weapon.
And I'm really letting the cat out of the bag with this one... There's
a secret staircase. Next time you're at the Bowery, glance to the exit
sign at the right of the stage. Follow it down and see where it leads.
Now that you know how to find it, reverse the process, and soak up the
joy of snagging a spot next to the stage without having to fight your
way up through the crowd from the back of the room. Lastly, smile
knowingly at the poor sods who haven't yet discovered your secret.
Share at your own discretion.
