NEW PHOTOS: Martin Sexton & Jonah Smith at Nokia Theater
Martin Sexton, one of the cornerstone musicians of the "new folk" acoustic singer-songwriter scene, brought his soulful tunes to Nokia Theater in New York's Times Square on 4/6/07. Relying heavily on tunes from his new release, "Seeds," he also mixed in a good share of old time faves. I would have liked to have heard some of the gospel-esque backing vocals prevalent on the new album represented in the live show. But the crowd full of Sextonites looked like they couldn't have cared less. They were there to worship at the altar of Martin, with or without backup singers.
One of the most important elements of creating a good show flow is to match the headliner with a suitable opener, and for their choice in openers for Martin, I give the show's organizers big props. Sexton's fellow Syracuse native, Jonah Smith, was da bomb. Speaking of, I'm off to go buy his debut CD. Check ya later...
